Mencap Family Engagement Project Overview

The Mencap Family Engagement Project will be supporting families of children up to 10 years of age, with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities, living within the Bradford area.

Our vision: To make Bradford the best place for children with SEND to live happy and healthy lives.

Our purpose: To work with families to build a community where they and their children can thrive.

We want to develop opportunities with and for parents and caregivers to:

  • Find the support they want and need
  • Connect them with other parents and caregivers
  • Connect them with services and opportunities that will help their family
  • Share their lived experience to support other parents and caregivers
  • Work with us to provide support for families like theirs

Children do not need to have a diagnosis or be on a pathway for families to access support. We cover any child with emerging needs, even if the parents aren’t sure which pathway they will need.

We are an optional service, and families can access as much or as little support as they wish, at a time that they want it, for as long as they need.

The project will be co-produced by families in line with what they want and need in a community led approach. We aim to enhance local area provision by empowering parents to help create a service that meets their needs.

We will engage with education, health, social care, and community partners. This will avoid duplication and will develop sustainable solutions that make best use of existing resources and assets.

We have now recruited 2 Family Connectors with lived experience of parenting children with SEND. The Family Connectors will provide peer support in the form of 1:1 phone calls and facilitate in-person coffee mornings. They will provide emotional support, a listening ear and understanding, as well as advice and signposting to other services and support.

In our other project areas, such as Tameside, we also provide a wide variety of co-produced sessions, with peer support running through the core of everything we do. In time, we would aim to develop sessions and activities in Bradford to meet the needs of families, as required.
