Webinar: Dismantling the Activity Trap – A Call for Action

Webinar: Dismantling the Activity Trap – A Call for Action
Date: Thursday 22nd October 2026
Time: 1:30pm
Location: Online via Zoom
Cost: Free
Organisers: Activity Alliance, Disability Rights UK, and Durham University
About the Event:
Disabled people have the right to be active, yet many face an unspoken barrier: the fear that being seen as physically active could negatively affect their eligibility for disability benefits. This issue, known as The Activity Trap, was first highlighted in 2018 and continues to impact disabled people’s lives today.
Disability Rights UK and Durham University have led a co-produced research project exploring how the Activity Trap operates in practice, drawing on findings from over 200 questionnaire respondents and 30 in-depth interviews. The research shows that this is far from just a fear—disabled people are facing real financial consequences, particularly during benefit applications and healthcare assessments.
During this session, attendees will:
  • Hear key findings and recommendations directly from the lead researchers
  • Understand how benefit assessment procedures impact physical activity choices
  • Explore opportunities to campaign for change and influence national policy
  • Discuss how to ensure disabled people can be active without risking their financial security
Who Should Attend:
Disabled people, advocates, community organisations, policymakers, and sport and activity providers looking to understand the evidence and push for meaningful reform.
